シェイクスピア・ソネット鑑賞短歌106: Tanka for Sonnet 106
106
きみの美を 称賛するも われらには
見る目はあるも ことばをもたず
I see their antique pen would have exprest
Even such a beauty as you master now.
For we, which now behold these present days,
Have eyes to wonder, but lack tongues to praise.
When in the chronicle of wasted time
I see descriptions of the fairest wights,
And beauty making beautiful old rime
In praise of ladies dead and lovely knights,
Then, in the blazon of sweet beauty’s best,
Of hand, of foot, of lip, of eye, of brow,
I see their antique pen would have exprest
Even such a beauty as you master now.
So all their praises are but prophecies
Of this our time, all you prefiguring;
And, for they lookt but with divining eyes,
They had not skill enough your worth to sing:
For we, which now behold these present days,
Have eyes to wonder, but lack tongues to praise.
キーワード訳注
When in the chronicle (年代記) of wasted time
I see descriptions of the fairest wights (人, 人間),
And beauty making beautiful old rime (=rhyme 韻, 韻文, 押韻)
In praise of ladies dead and lovely knights,
Then, in the blazon (紋章) of sweet beauty’s best,
Of hand, of foot, of lip, of eye, of brow,
I see their antique pen would have exprest (=expressed)
Even such a beauty as you master (熟達する) now.
So all their praises are but prophecies
Of this our time, all you prefiguring (あらかじめ示す);
And, for they lookt but with divining (divine 神の, 神性の) eyes,
They had not skill enough your worth to sing:
For we, which now behold these present days,
Have eyes to wonder, but lack tongues to praise.
