シェイクスピア・ソネット鑑賞短歌68: Tanka for Sonnet 68
68
自然こそ 本当の美を 後の世に
示すためにぞ 彼を生かした
When beauty lived and died as flowers do now,
In him those holy antique hours are seen,
And him as for a map doth Nature store,
To show false Art what beauty was of yore.
Thus is his cheek the map of days outworn,
When beauty lived and died as flowers do now,
Before these bastard signs of fair were born,
Or durst inhabit on a living brow;
Before the golden tresses of the dead,
The right of sepulchers, were shorn away,
To live a second life on second head;
Ere beauty’s dead fleece made another gay:
In him those holy antique hours are seen,
Without all ornament, itself, and true,
Making no summer of another’s green,
Robbing no old to dress his beauty new;
And him as for a map doth Nature store,
To show false Art what beauty was of yore.
キーワード訳注
Thus is his cheek the map of days outworn (outwear 着古す; すり切らす),
When beauty lived and died as flowers do now,
Before these bastard signs of fair were born,
Or durst (=dare あえて〜する) inhabit on a living brow;
Before the golden tresses (女性のふさふさした髪) of the dead,
The right of sepulchers (石, 煉瓦でつくった墓), were shorn (shearの過去分詞: 刈りとる, 毛を刈る) away,
To live a second life on second head;
Ere (=before) beauty’s dead fleece (羊毛) made another gay (=gaiety 陽気, 快活, 華美):
In him those holy antique hours are seen,
Without all ornament, itself, and true,
Making no summer of another’s green,
Robbing no old to dress his beauty new;
And him as for a map doth Nature store,
To show false Art what beauty was of yore (昔, 往時)
