シェイクスピア形式ソネットとは
ソネットというのは、14行の弱強5歩格(アイアンビックペンタミター; iambic pentameter)からなる押韻詩(rhymed verse)です。ダンテがVita Nuova(新生)に用い、のちにルネッサンス時代にイタリアからヨーロッパに普及し、フランスを経てイギリスに伝わった詩形です。古くは18行からなる恋歌でしたが、17世紀頃から14行詩に制限されるようになりました。
イタリアの14行詩とは異なる押韻法がイギリスにでてきました。イギリスのソネットはその押韻の形式にイタリア式とイギリス式が出現しました。後者はシェイクスピア形式とも呼ばれます。（「英詩概論」斎藤勇著、研究社、1957、iambic pentameter-Wikipedia）
シェイクスピア形式ソネットの三大特徴
シェイクスピア形式のソネットの特徴は、次の３つです。
第一に、14行詩であること。
第二に、abab cdcd efef gg の韻をふんでいること(押韻)。
第三に、弱強五歩格(iambic pentameter アイアンビックペンタミター)の韻律で書かれていること。
シェイクスピアのソネット1(下記)から、この３つについて見ていきましょう。まず、特徴の第一と第二についてです。先頭の数字は行数をあらわします。14行であることは明らかです。
abab cdcd efef gg の押韻
押韻をみると、ababは、a = ‘ease’、b = ‘e’ の韻で、increase-die/decrease-memoryです。cdcdは、c = ‘es’、d = ‘uel’ の韻で、eyes-fuel/lies-cruel です。efefは、e = ‘ment’、f = ‘ing’の韻で、ornament-spring/content-niggarding です。ggは、g = ‘e’ で、be-thee です。各行の最後のことばに注目すれば、明確に押韻を知ることができるでしょう。
この、abab cdcd efef ggがリズミカルな音調を生み出しています。

弱強五歩格(アイアンビックペンタミター; iambic pentarmeter)
次に、第三の弱強五歩格(アイアンビックペンタミター; iambic pentarmeter)です。アイアンビックペンタミター(iambic pentarmeter)の、アイアンブ(iamb)は、韻律の要素である「歩格(foot)」をあらわし、弱い(強調しない)音節と、強調する音節の結合からなる歩格(foot)です。
ペンタミター(pentameter)は、5つの歩格からなる詩、韻文のことです。ペンタ(penta-)は5つのことを意味します。つまり、アイアンビックペンタミター(iambic pentameter)とは、5つの歩格からなる韻文をあらわします。
それでは、ソネット1の弱強五歩格をみてみましょう。このように、原則1行に弱強五歩格からなっています。ただし、必ずしもすべての行が弱強五歩格ではなく、行をまたいでいるものもあります。例えば、5行目は弱の音節でおわり、6行目は強の音節ではじまっています。このように例外はありますが、基本的には弱強五歩格がひとつの韻律を構成しています。
ソネット1には、全部で14の弱強五歩格があります。さらに言えば、全部で70 (= 5 x 14)の弱強歩格から構成されています。これに先の、abab cdcd efef gg の押韻が重なり、英語の魅力を発揮した全体の韻律の音響効果を生み出しているのです。
