シェイクスピア・ソネット鑑賞短歌22: Tanka for Sonnet 22

中湖 康太

22
君の美に 時がしるしを 刻んだら
死を覚悟する その美と共に
When in thee time’s furrows I behold,
Then look I death my days should expiate.
For all that beauty that doth cover thee
Is but the seemly raiment of my heart.

My glass shall not persuade me I am old,
So long as youth and thou are of one date;
But when in thee time’s furrows I behold,
Then look I death my days should expiate.
For all that beauty that doth cover thee
Is but the seemly raiment of my heart,
Which in thy breast doth live, as thine in me:
How can I, then, be elder than thou art?
O, therefore, love, be of thyself so wary
As I, not for myself, but for thee will;
Bearing thy heart, which I will keep so chary
As tender nurse her babe from faring ill.
Presume not on thy heart when mine is slain;
Thou gavest me thine, not to give back again.

キーワード訳注
My glass shall not persuade me I am old,
So long as youth and thou are of one date;
But when in thee time’s furrows (あぜ, 溝) I behold (見る),
Then look I death my days should expiate (償う).
For all that beauty that doth cover thee
Is but the seemly raiment (衣類, 衣服) of my heart,
Which in thy breast doth live, as thine (=yours) in me:
How can I, then, be elder than thou art (=you are)?
O, therefore, love, be of thyself so wary (用心深い, 慎重な)
As I, not for myself, but for thee will;
Bearing (身につける; もつ) thy heart, which I will keep so chary (用心深い)
As tender nurse her babe from faring (続く) ill.
Presume not on thy heart when mine is slain (slay殺害する; の過去分詞);
Thou gavest me thine, not to give back again.
